Emphasizes the human side of HIV The Science of HIV is the first curriculum developed program to bring leading edge research on this challenging virus to the science classroom. It was developed with support from Abbot Laboratories (a leading pharmaceutical) and published by the National Science Teacher’s Association. It was written using the National Science Education Standards as a guide for inclusion of topics, for assessment methods, and for design of the teaching methods called for in the chapters. The Viruses video is a Discovery Channel production. Both book and video were coordinated to provide a range of learning opportunities – labs, activities, readings, model design, guided discussions, and with the video, a way to see research in action. Key areas of biology and health education are covered, including cell biology, general virus and HIV structure, immune system function and HIV infection, the latest drug therapeutics and infection prevention. Most important of all, the program emphasizes the human side of HIV – the work of researchers and clinicians, and the battles fought by those infected, making the science behind this infection real for students. Grades 9-12, AP, College. Video is 30 minutes. Book is 172 pages, softcover.
