Challenge young engineers to design and build a three-story “earthquake resistant” structure using only a set amount of glue, toothpicks, craft sticks, wooden splints, Styrofoam® and their own ingenuity. A base isolator can also be built from materials students select and supply. Once complete, students can actually test whether their structure withstands an “earthquake” by using teacher Ric Parlier’s specially designed Shake, Rattle and Roll Earthquake Board. Includes instructions. Grades 6–9.
