In recent times scientists have begun to understand that a cell's outer border - the cell or plasma membrane - is as significant a structure as those parts enclosed and protected within it. In this lesson students are introduced to some of the cell membrane's functions such as protection of the cell from environmental conditions and the recognition of foreign particles.
