Shake, Rattle & Roll Earthquake Board:
Make seismic waves in your classroom with this “wavemaker” earthquake board and kit. The first part of this complete unit describes how to use a Slinky® spring to demonstrate four types of seismic waves — primary, secondary, Raleigh, and L-waves. Students then place their Towering Toothpick structures onto the board and create “quakes” of gradually increasing magnitude to test the durability of their designs. Developed by teacher Ric Parlier.
For grades 6-9. Includes: assembled wavemaker, Slinky® spring, materials (plywood, springs, screws) to build a single base isolator, and a teacher’s guide including lesson plans and background information.
Reusable Base Isolator for Shake, Rattle & Roll Earthquake Board:
What is a base isolator? Engineers have developed these life and property saving devices for earthquake prone regions to make structures less rigid when an earthquake hits. This new and improved base isolator is now reusable and features Velcro®. This board accompanies the new Shake, Rattle & Roll Earthquake Board and also works with the original model.
