Genetics of Bloops Kit (Teacher-Developed, Classroom-Tested) |
"Bloops" are strange but cute little creatures that, as teacher developer Anthony Garofalo has discovered, are perfect for helping students make sense of Mendelian genetics, especially concepts of dominance and recessiveness.
Students pick different colored "genes" from "parental gene bags"; snap them together to form chromosomes; then "read" the color sequences to determine what traits their "Bloops" have inherited.
Will their eyes be green or red? Their antennae blue or yellow? Their tails straight or curly? Winged or not? Works stand alone or in conjunction with an existing biology text and program. Covers genotype and phenotype; genes and alleles; Punnett squares and more. Grades 5-8.
