Nitinol Wire With A Memory |
Nitinol is pretty amazing stuff and a great lead in to discussions and explorations of real-world applications of shape memory materials. It generates a shape resuming force of 22,000 pounds per square inch. Its operation resembles that of a muscle; it contracts when heated, then when cooled can easily be stretched back to its original length. Here we offer a package of two 3″ lengths of nitinol wire with small plastic knobs at either end. You can modify the “memorized” shape by annealing the wire. While holding the wire with two pairs of pliers, choose a new shape and hold it in a candle’s flame until it is slightly red and stops trying to straighten. Dip the wire into ice water, then straighten it. When you heat it, it will “remember” the new shape. Set of two.
