Immersion Oil |
Immersion oil is used to limit the refraction of light between a slide and oil objective or (less often) between a condenser and slide. Our Cargille immersion oils are all manufactured to a refractive index of nD 1.515, which is an industry standard and is very close to the refractive index of glass. They are all PCB free. Immersion oils vary in viscosity and which to use is a matter of personal preference. Viscosity is measured in centistokes - for comparison- the viscosity of pure maple syrup is about 150 centistokes, of molasses is about 2,500 centistokes, and of honey is about 15,000 centistokes.
