Enigma: An Inference Demonstration (Teacher-Developed, Classroom-Tested)
Prior to class, pour 400 mL of water into the hole at the top of this black box. When class begins, let students watch you add 75 mL of water, then see more than 350 mL come out the bottom. Next, show students that you poured 400 mL in first and then added the 75 mL. Students must determine what is happening inside the box, which was developed by junior high teacher Joe Gilbert. There are no right or wrong answers –only good theories. Grades 6-12.
