The Grotto del Cano (“Cave of Dogs”) in Italy was so named because of an interesting phenomena that occurs there – dogs (and other short animals) that enter the cave die within minutes. The reason is the air at the floor of the cave has a very high concentration of carbon dioxide, which depletes oxygen. The process demonstrated in this kit is similar to what takes place in the “Cave of Dogs”. Here, four “steps”, each holding a candle, are placed inside the transparent Perspex box. The candles are lit. A container of CO2 (which you prepare using the kit’s unique gas generator) is “poured” into the box. The CO2 sinks toward the bottom of the box, forming a layer. As more gas is poured, this layer rises, extinguishing the candles one by one, from bottom to top. A very dramatic demonstration. Includes: Perspex box, transparent steps, 4 candles, gas generator, bottle marked CO2, 6 containers acetic acid, container of NaHCO3, measuring spoon, 1 splint, 1 box matches.
