Biomes Videos (VHS) |
Biomes is a beautiful five-part series that explores the creation of ecosystems and survival of their plant and animal inhabitants. Your students will marvel at the power and wonder of the natural environment. Programs include Coasts, Temperate Forests, Deserts & Grasslands, Freshwater and Island Ecosystems. In Coasts, students learn that coastlines offer a rich source of nourishment to the plants and animals that live on them or migrate to them each year. Along 120,000 miles of Asia’s shoreline, land and sea churn and blend in a process that has created some of the world’s greatest natural treasures, from coral reef ecosystems to vast mangrove forests. In Temperate Forests, students get to experience life in a temperate deciduous forest of northern Japan and learn the strategies organisms use to survive seasonal change. Large purple butterflies emerge from their cocoons in summer; macaques give birth to a new generation each spring; and the Japanese dormouse packs on the pounds before winter sets in. In Deserts and Grasslands, student learn that the extreme temperatures of the Gobi desert and the arid grasslands of the Mongolian steppe offer little relief to life struggling to exist there. They learn how the last of the world’s wild horses and camels, as well as the delicate demoiselle crane, have adapted to survive. In Freshwater, students witness the remarkable adaptations of animals living in the constantly thawing and freezing climate of East Asia. Cherry salmon spend winter in the fast-flowing mountain waters, and bears, seals, and cranes rely on the freshwater habitat for survival. Island Ecosystems shows how many islands in Southeast Asia have been isolated for thousands of years, forcing wildlife to adapt and evolve in strange, even startling, ways. Travel to Java, formed after the last ice age, to Anak Krakatoa, which rose from the sea 70 years ago, and to the 30-million-year-old island of Sulawesi. After watching these progr
